STATUS REPORT OF SEPTEMBER 23, 2007

Former National Park Service Director George B. Hartzog, Jr. has verbally approved the Sharsmith Peak naming and will provide a supporting statement for posting on this website and transmittal to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, according to Douglass Hubbard of the Name4Carl Committee.

Consideration had earlier been given to precedents in naming areas within wilderness, suggested by individuals and Dr. Owen Hoffman of the Name4Carl Committee. This issue relates to policies of the U.S. Board on Geographic Names and the National Park Service that withhold approval of names in such places, but allowing certain exceptions. It matters in the context of naming Sharsmith Peak in that there is wilderness on one side of the peak and non-wilderness on the other. Some hold that this places the peak "within" wilderness so the policies apply, but the peak is not within but at the edge of wilderness. One such precedent for naming a peak within wilderness is that of Mount Ansel Adams, on the southeastern border of Yosemite National Park where the park abuts Sierra National Forest. Mount Ansel Adams was officially named by the Board in 1985, yet legislated wilderness existed in the park on one side since 1984 and in the forest on the other since 1964. Mount Ansel Adams was also named one year after Adams' death, whereas the Board now has a policy of not approving names for at least 5 years after the namesake's death.
